Weekend Reading — 🍵 One of those days …

This week we learn about the four elements, learn about the sordid history of NFTs, the Small Hadron Collider, and the weirdest castle of them all.

Weekend Reading — 🍵 One of those days …

🪑 Design Objective

Alex Rodriguez

Every app is fighting for their life with push notifications and growth hacks, meanwhile wordle is right there having us do our daily pilgrimage to a mobile website"

githubocto/flat-ui I love the histogram at the top of the column — quickly view min/max/average and get a sense for how values are distributed:

We just added a new feature to our flat-ui React component:
✨ the ability to edit data like a spreadsheet✨
grab it for an easy spreadsheet interface that shows off your data. we would love to hear how you all end up using it!

🧰 Tools of the Trade

Curtis Einsmann I tried a few settings, 16 was easier use than 8 (20 doesn't align nicely):

For me, this was a life changing VS code tip.
"workbench.tree.indent": 20
Here's the before and after. I wish I'd known this months ago! It would've saved so many headaches. ?

Simon Plenderleith One less hack:

If you want to deep clone a value in @nodejs, you no longer need to use a library or the JSON.parse(JSON.stringify(value)) hack.
You can use the new global function structuredClone()
‣ Added: v17.0.0
‣ Also available in Deno, Firefox 94 + Chrome 98

A small JavaScript tip I like to determine whether an array contains duplicate entries.
It relies on the fact that indexOf(..) returns the index of the first occurrence. If it returns a different value than the current index, it means the entry exists earlier in the array.

Browsix: Unix in the browser tab Run LaTeX, GNU Make, POSIX shell scripts. Interestingly, they don’t emulate the Unix kernel in JavaScript, rather “mapping low-level Unix primitives, like processes and system calls, onto existing browser APIs, like Web Workers and postMessage.”

Daniel Stenberg

If you are a multi billion dollar company and are concerned about log4j, why not just email OSS authors you never paid anything and demand a response for free within 24 hours with lots of info? (company name redacted for my peace of mind)

Brad Fitzpatrick

Kid just asked me whether there was a negative zero.
I knew this day would come but I wasn't quite ready to have The Talk about IEEE 754 quite yet."

Carla Notarobot: “The existence of Google Earth, Apple Air, and Amazon Fire implies there must be a Microsoft Water.”

Laurie Voss:

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Teamwork

Paul Graham I don’t think that developers who agree to only work on vanity projects are “the best employees”, but you do you …

Tech companies must keep shipping cool new things or die. Not because customers require it, but because the best employees do. If your best programmers stop being able to ship new things, they'll leave to work somewhere they can.

Michael Perry

Most consistent thing I've seen over my 15 year career:

glerpie “I guess I’ll tweet this”

📈 Business Side

Bugger Oaf

Startup success relies on quality of storytelling / narrative construction from the founders.
All founders go thru "pitch pain" where they have to actually question "what does my startup do?"
small thread on how enduring "pitch pain" too late in the startup can be fatal"

Jack Altman

Things to avoid as your startup scales:

🔒 Locked Doors

The Problem With NFTs This video is 2+ hours and yet after I finished watching I wish it was longer still. There's so much to cover about crypto and NFTs. It tears through the tech-bro Amway, the grifts and the scams, the cult-like rituals, the ideas that don't work in practice and won't work in theory, the dystopia, antisemitism, and whitewashing, the works.

If someone pitches you on a “great” Web3 project, ask them if it requires buying or selling crypto to do what they say it does."

Caroline “Caro” Renard

The only writing advice I’ll offer: just write it down, dude. Stop trying to make it perfect the first time. You can fix bad. You can’t fix nothing."

Orly Lobel “I see you smart bookstore #bookstore”

Steph Smith

My yoga teacher always starts class with this line:
"Congrats. The hardest part is over. You showed up."
I feel like that mindset applies to most other things.
Worrying about a task often is far worse than the task itself. Starting is the hardest part."

Me: Can I throw my computer out the window?
Husband: No.

Dick King-Smith HQ “Built to answer some fundamental open questions in physics, the Small Hadron Collider (SHC) is the most powerful purrticle accelerator ever built.”

Rebecca Makkai Everything about this place …

The thing you need to understand about today's Zillow find is that it was built in 2010 in the United States of America. 1

God: To make you all safer, I've made sure 50% of humanity is alert in the morning and 50% in the evening
Humans: We'll make the other 50% also get up in the morning
God: holdon\n> Humans: Not getting up at 5am is a moral failure
God: No, plz stop
Humans: society demands it, you bum
