Software developers, I need you to listen to me: error states are as important to handle well as success states. It would be great if your users only ever experienced success, but the reality is things will go wrong some of the time, and if your software sucks when this happens, users will begin to hate it no matter how great it is when things go right.

When you wisper to yourself "I wish Excel supported CSS"... it's probably time to pack it up, close the laptop, and take inventory of your life and all the decisions that led up to this point.

In the last five years, we've gone from "employees will never have to go into an office" to "employees need to be in the office because creative and innovative work can only be done face-to-face between humans" to "lol we don't need humans"

On my odyssey to find examples of AI making software companies more productive instead of as an excuse for layoffs, I stumbled on the Tiny Teams Hall of Fame. Notable entries to me are Cursor with $200M ARR with 20 employees and Midjourney also with $200M ARR and just 10 employees.

Manage For Success, Not Comfort There's the line you don't want to cross, between "you need to be available 24/7" and "we need to focus more on X". Learn the difference:

Companies don’t hire engineering managers to create happy places where nothing gets done. They hire managers to build teams that deliver results. This doesn’t mean creating a toxic pressure cooker, please. But it does mean having the courage to make unpopular decisions that serve the team’s long-term success, even when they cause short-term discomfort.

Confidentiality Agreements Can Act Like Noncompetes Watch out before you sign the dotted line:

If confidentiality agreements can be written so broadly that they have the functional effect of noncompetes, then companies can get around the restrictions on noncompetes by imposing perpetual, noncompete-like confidentiality obligations on workers. Our study of confidentiality agreements, which we discuss below, suggests that many confidentiality provisions are indeed being drafted to be very broad and may have some of the same functional effects as noncompetes, while also being written to last forever and apply world worldwide.

Insecurity

WhatsApp banned on House staffers' devices 🚨

The Office of Cybersecurity has deemed WhatsApp a high-risk to users due to the lack of transparency in how it protects user data, absence of stored data encryption, and potential security risks involved with its use," the CAO said in an email obtained by Axios.

No matter how much Google ask to install "Gemini CLI: your open-source AI agent" for your terminal on macOS, Linux, Unix or other oses, do not install it. Here is a snippet from their policy: Google collects your prompts, related code, generated output, code edits, related feature usage information, and your feedback to provide, improve, and develop Google products and services and ML technologies. All your data on disk will be the part of AI training which is privacy nightmare

My husband and I arrived at a party and their dog was too excited. I offered to take her for a walk and we jogged around the nearby fields for the next three hours. When we got back, my husband looked pleased to see me and we said goodbye. That is my favourite party ever.

"Ecology without class war is gardening" Saw this on a sticker in the street in France. The original quote was "l'écologie sans lutte de classes c'est du jardinage" ETA: quote attributed to Brazilian environmentalist and trade union leader Chico Mendes (1944–1988). In Portuguese: "Ecologia sem luta de classes é jardinagem".

Dept. Q I'm really digging this show. It starts slow but by episode three I was hooked. It doesn't ramp up the actions-per-minute like US shows do, rather the story line gets more involved and interesting. It takes place in Scotland, so if you're accustomed to US English, you may need to watch it with CC on. Has many familiar characters from other British shows, so what's not to like?

I can't get over this sentence no matter how often I read it. "Women showed no effects when told they were masculine; however, men given feedback suggesting they were feminine expressed more support for war, homophobic attitudes, and interest in purchasing an SUV."

Take 3 minutes to delete these words and improve your writing forever Pretty much what it says on the box. Replace "however", "unfortunately", "honestly", "just", "truly", and other filler words to make your writing smoother and punchier.

San Francisco bookstores pull 'Harry Potter' books over J.K. Rowling's anti-trans pledge

Booksmith, located on Haight Street, said via statement, it would no longer carry Rowling's books following the author's pledge to fund the J.K. Rowling Women's Fund, which she described as an organization committed to removing transgender protections "in the workplace, in public life, and in protected female spaces."

The Hollow Men of Hims The story of Hims changing the formulation one tiny bit to get approved as compounded medicine and then selling you Chinese knockoffs at elevated price while complaining about the US pharmaceutical industry:
