    Rounded Corners – 102

    Workaround. Apparently, the java.net.URL behavior is quite nutty. Want to know if two URLs are equal? Well, it depends on the time of the day, the status of your network connection, and what the DNS service feels like. Not to mention, that simple equals could take several minutes to execute.

    It sounded so over the top, I had to follow the bug report and check it out. Yep, it’s real. Fortunately, every bug reports requires you to post a workaround. This one is a gem:

    Workaround: URL is final, so this is hopeless.

    Blue light special. Over at TechMeme, the wise crowds are discussing how piracy helped boost the Romanian IT industry. But more interesting news comes from InfoWorld: “French authorities will give out 175,000 USB memory sticks loaded with open-source software to Parisian high-school students at the start of the next school year.” Teaching the next generation to use Firefox and OpenOffice? Not a bad idea. And it only costs $20 per student.

    He how lives in a glass house … Speaking of the French, I guess Steve Jobs has had enough with the Europeans pointing fingers at him, and decided to point back at them. That should buy him some time and adoration, while the big four keep chasing their tales.

    Unless, of course, he knows something we don’t know, and just pre-announcing the inevitable.

    Google Reader Goodness. Thanks to LifeHacker for reminding me of all the Google Reader shortcuts I didn’t know exist.

    The hunt for Jim Gray. Which you can help using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk.

      Don’t worry about final just:

      alias :old_final :final

      def final
      open
      end

      Ups! You were talking about Java, sorry… ;-)
